Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the option to contest specific decisions from the official, following the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
