As Sunbathers Fled Danger, Widely-Shared Picture Depicts Beach Patrol Running ‘All Out’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the iconic coast as her back yard. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, similar to other local residents, heard pops reverberating through the community.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was too light and there was nothing visible,” she explains. Stepping out of her apartment, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore told her trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the road, conversing with a duo who had hurried up the hill soaked, she heard someone approaching from behind. The person was a lifeguard, dashing to Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was the only one heading in the path that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and unshod … He’s running at something that undoubtedly every part of you would instruct you to move in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely full throttle racing.”

A Symbol of Heroism In the Wake of Chaos

The photograph taken by Ching of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous instances of valour in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, law enforcement and ambulance crews caring for numerous those hurt.

Community Response and Support

Doolan’s account was just one of many to come out of the local area, with the patrol base adjacent to the site of the incident becoming a temporary hospital. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, for instance rushing into the water to assist people who were struggling.

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many permanent lifeguards, stated that the team rose to the occasion from the instant the incident commenced right into late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many emotional accounts, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” commented a local official.
